SailGP launches its first documentary series featuring Jimmy Spithill
Curious what those lightning-fast F50 cats get up to once the broadcast lights dim? Queue up Uncharted—a three-part SailGP series now streaming free on Boating NZ. Each 30-minute episode shadows two-time America’s Cup skipper Jimmy Spithill as he builds Red Bull Italy SailGP from a blank sheet, battles the budget, and learns to harness the world’s quickest racing multihull.
Episode one, “Man overboard,” revisits Oracle’s famous 2013 comeback before Spithill’s first trial sail with a freshly minted Italian crew. Episode two captures the skipper’s abrupt split from the United States team and a bruising capsize in Bermuda. The finale pits the fledgling Italians against Taylor Canfield’s rebuilt USA outfit—vital championship points and national pride on the line.
“Uncharted is more than a behind-the-scenes look at SailGP—it’s a raw, honest journey into what it really takes to build something from the ground up,” Spithill says. Executive producer Melissa Lawton adds that the series “strips back the human stories behind SailGP’s rise”, aiming to hook fresh eyes the way Drive to Survive did for Formula One.
