How to stay organised on your boat

How to stay organised on your boat

November 2021

Keen to have everything on your boat looking ship-shape? Heres some ideas on how to stay organised.

Just as an aside, did you know “ship-shape” is a phrase that’s been around since the 17th century? Anyway, back to the business of organising your boat (it has obviously been important for hundreds of years!). The team at Discover Boating has come up with 10 ways to stay organised on board, with these tips pertaining to storage ideas.

“The good news is that there’s no limit to creative stowage options on a boat. Just look at everyday items in a new way and soon you’ll be better organised and more de-cluttered than Marie Kondo,” the article promises.

Here’s how they suggest you do it… consider using:

  • suction cups and Velcro (to hang things from)
  • collapsible silicon buckets
  • pre-made mesh pockets (in which to stash things)
  • magnetic strips for storing knives (ensure they’re nowhere near the compass though)
  • plastic accordion files - available at office supply stores - offer multiple pockets (good for storing things like sandpaper)
  • magazine organisers - secured to a shelf, which can provide excellent storage for dishes, or other kitchen supplies
  • hanging fabric shelves for shoe storage or clothing
  • a portable shower caddy for transporting happy hour necessities
  • a plastic pill dispenser box for spices (for fish cooking, of course)
  • a long cord with an array of hooks (or multiple small cords attached point-to-point) to create overhead stowage space for charts and chopping boards, for example.

Have a proper read of the suggested tips. Chances are, you’ll come up with some additional ideas of your own.
