Mariner Insurance recently welcomed a new commercial partner to the fold – Hawke’s Bay Marine. We’re sharing their story and a little expert knowledge on boat buying.

Their business has been a beacon for boating enthusiasts since John and Ruth took over in 2016. With a deep-rooted passion for boating, John and his family have successfully developed Hawke’s Bay Marine into a thriving hub for boaters in the region.

The Journey to Hawke's Bay Marine

John and Ruth, natives of Dannevirke & Hastings respectively, left their corporate careers in Auckland to return to Hawke's Bay in 2009. Reflecting on their decision to acquire Hawke’s Bay Marine, they shared, "We had an automotive & electrical business in Hastings, three young children & more energy than sense when we decided that another business opportunity would be a good idea! John had always been around boats, so it was a good fit."

A Passion for Boating

Boating has always been more than just a hobby for John - it’s a way of life, having grown up boating on Lake Taupo. This is also where John and Ruth had their first date on a boating trip 23 years ago. Later, while living in Auckland, the couple spent countless weekends exploring the Hauraki Gulf, seeking solace behind the many islands. "Boating, for us, has always been a mix of leisure boating and fishing. When we lived in Auckland, we often simply stayed out hidden behind one of the many islands in the Gulf for the weekend to de-stress."

Now, their boating adventures span across Napier, Lake Taupo, and the Hauraki Gulf. Ruth adds, "My father now lives on Kawau Island, so the Gulf is still a favourite place to hang out. Now it’s a mix of Napier, Taupo and the Gulf."

"We are primarily a service and repower centre but also do a lot of specialist electronic upgrade installations," says John. "Trolling motors and new autopilot systems for boats are very popular right now. Boat sales have slowed but repowers are still going strong and our outboard brands Suzuki & Mercury are proving to be popular choices."

John and Ruth have run Hawke’s Bay Marine for over eight years and been boating for decades, so they know a thing or two about buying a vessel. Here are their top five tips:

• If not buying new, then age and service history of the motor is important – this is the hardest working member of your crew and it needs to be looked after to be reliable and get you home after a day out on the water.
• New or used, each boat is set up differently and you need to have a clear idea of what you want and don’t want in a boat, otherwise you can spend more than you need to.
• Safety & communications gear – make sure it's working or be prepared to invest in replacements. It’s the one thing you need but hope to never use.
• Seek professional advice. Specialist marine shops have the experience and expertise to help with your purchase as well as support from suppliers themselves.
• Don’t overlook the trailer. Is it sound? Does it meet regulations?

"Anchoring off Tongoio on a fine day is always nice, as is anywhere on Lake Taupo. For fishing, however, we (try to) follow the fish! Hawke’s Bay has such a variety that every trip is a different experience."
