Welcome Jason Hunter to the Mariner crew

He loves getting the boat out, enjoys fly and lure fishing (both salt and fresh water) and is keen to learn to sail.

All indicators are that Jason Hunter is a great catch for the Mariner team.

Jason is Mariner’s newest staff member, taking on the role of Sales Support. It’s a position that involves many aspects of the business and Jason says he is learning a lot and thoroughly enjoying the process.

Now based in Auckland, Jason’s early workdays saw him employed in real estate in his home city of Hamilton before he headed off to more foreign pastures for several years. He worked in London as an account manager for the Association of Accounting Technicians.

He used his time in the northern hemisphere to grab tropical holiday opportunities whenever possible - Morocco, South Africa, Spain, the Mediterranean… fishing whenever he could.

Once his feet were firmly back in New Zealand, he landed a role in the Les Mills sales team before moving to Mariner.

“There is much to enjoy here. Working as a collective is something that has really stood out to me and generates a friendly environment. Plus, looking at nice boats all day isn’t half bad,” he laughs.

That exposure has “definitely” given him some ideas regarding the ideal offshore fishing boat. But, for the moment his small Savage Bay Cruiser will have to do for the coastal/shallow water fishing he enjoys.

Jason has been fishing since he was a kid but says he didn’t “apply method to the madness” until he was about 18. Coromandel is a favourite fishing spot, but he’s looking at expanding that to try out a lot more coastal waters over the years to come. The future should also hold sailing lessons as he would “love to do a crossing to the islands”.

On dry land, restoring retro land cruisers is his thing.

“I’ve always enjoyed working on cars and the land cruiser seems to fit my lifestyle the best. I do have a 1986 ‘60 series Landcruiser’. For me this model has the best mix of comfort and character,” Jason says.
